Charlotte, the first princess of Belgium and the last empress of Mexico, is locked up in a castle in Italy.  Thousands of miles away, her husband, emperor Maximilian, has been shot in front of a firing squad.  Everyone has been ordered not to tell the young woman the news as her mental state has spiraled into madness. 

 

In this intimate biopic, the story of Charlotte is told from her perspective and explores the how and why a young woman of 26 ended up mad and locked-up. The screenplay was based on Charlotte's letters, which Two M Films was given access to at the Archives of the Royal Palace in Brussels.
